Comets had other ideas and pulled one back within minutes and also bagged a late consolation in injury time for Sumas to hang on at 3-2. U15s: Wokingham & Emmbrook Oranges 3 – 2 Ashridge Park Royals

Evans Hat Trick Sinks Royals

A first half hat trick from Kai Evans helped Wokingham & Emmbrook FC “Oranges”, who are sponsored by Mantra 2 Tattoo Studio, overcome local rivals Ashridge Park Royals in their East Berkshire Football Alliance U15s Division 4 match on Saturday.  Oranges started the day one place off bottom of the table, while Royals were one place off the top, but it was the young Sumas who ended the day with the points and the bragging rights after a hard-fought game on a cold, wet Saturday morning at Cantley Park.

Royals started the game brightly, passing the ball around confidently in midfield, but Oranges had their game plan and stuck to it well, defending resolutely and using the width of the park to great effect.  The first goal came from Evans, operating wide on the right, who saw his dipping cross-cum-shot fumbled over the line by the Ashridge ‘keeper on eight minutes.  Oranges began to grow into the game, gaining in confidence, and went 2-0 up on 23 minutes when Ollie Vickers’ great diagonal pass found Evans on the corner of the penalty box and, much like in the closing minutes of the Oranges’ cup win last week, he fired a rocket of a shot into the opposite corner of the net.  Evans completed his hat trick five minutes before the interval, when he regained possession and fired home a great solo goal.

Ashridge came out in the second half with all guns blazing, and the Oranges had to battle under a great deal of pressure. Royals pulled one back after 7 minutes when Wokingham didn’t take their opportunities to clear the ball from their own box, and got a second nine minutes later. Both sides created chances as the game wore on, and while Ashridge could have equalised, the Sumas could have put the game beyond their reach with a number of good chances in the final twenty minutes.

Oranges’ man-of-the-match was central defender Jack Pickup, who stuck to his job, stuck to the game plan and showed great desire and commitment throughout the game.

Sumas have six appeal

U18s Oranges 0 - 6 Laurel Park Tornadoes

The Oranges were taught a lesson today by a stronger team from Laurel Park.  2-0 at half-time and the team would have had to retrieve a result for the third time this season, however it was not to be as the slick conditions played into the hands of the away team.  The Oranges were missingkey players, in particular John Gabat who fractured his hip at the previous evening's training session. Josh McBain stepped between the posts doing a great job despite the scoreline.  Man of the Match went to Aggie Halley.

U18s: Wokingham & Emmbrook FC Sumas 0 Hurst FC 1

Sumas rue missed pen

Despite dominating large parts of this highly contested game, the Sumas suffered their first defeat of the season following 7 straight wins. Sumas who went behind from a quickly taken corner on 27 mins  looked likely to be level at the break only for Connor Holland’s 44th minute spot kick to be saved. In the second period Sumas had chances but failed to convert them and were left rueing those missed chances. Defender Sam Martin picked up the Sumas Man of the Match.

U18s: Burnham JL Blues 1 Wokingham & Emmbrook FC Sumas 1

Sumas hard fought point well deserved

Sumas battled the conditions away to Burnham in a game of two differing halves as the high winds affected this competitive match. Sumas acquitted themselves well from the start and with the wind advantage took the lead on 15 mins when Connor Hollands cross was headed home by Calum Woodfield for 1-0. In the second half Sumas were resolute defensively as a team and held out for 75 mins when Burnham levelled matters. Despite some good Sumas breakaways they couldn’t find that elusive winner and had to settle for a well deserved point from the divisional leaders. Man of the Match for the Sumas went to hardworking midfielder Max Treacher.

Teddington Athletic Sharks 2 – 3 Wokingham & Emmbrook Oranges

Oranges Survive Late Comeback To Secure Away Win

A late comeback wasn’t enough to deny Wokingham & Emmbrook FC “Oranges”, sponsored by Mantra 2 Tattoo Studio, a hard-earned victory in their East Berkshire Football Alliance U15s Division 4 match on Saturday.

Oranges started the day bottom of the table, but in no way looked out of their depth against a Teddington side who finished two divisions above them last season.  Although the Sharks created more chances, Oranges had plenty of the ball, and just lacked that final pass to open up the Teddington defence.  Kai Evans started brightly on the right for Wokingham, and finally helped his side take the lead when his cross found Matt Rogers who headed the ball beyond the ‘keeper seconds before the half-time whistle.

Three minutes into the second half Evans was involved again in the scoring, this time sprinting onto Nathan Mulvaney’s clever through-ball to fire his side 2-0 up. And Mulvaney also got his name on the score sheet with eight minutes remaining, when he collected Oliver Vickers’ pass and burst into the box to make it 3-0. That should have been game over, but Oranges tired and lost some of their shape and discipline in the closing stages, conceding a well-worked goal with only six minutes remaining, and then a penalty with virtually the last kick of the game.

It was a performance of hard work and character, at times lit up by some flowing counter-attacks and great passing from the Wokingham boys. But it was hard work that earned the points, typified by Kieran Edgecock on the left wing (and at times left back) who picked up the man-of-the-match award in only his third outing for the team.

Wokingham & Emmbrook FC 2 - 1 Oxford City Nomads

Wokingham & Emmbrook FC 2 - 1 Oxford City Nomads

Wokingham & Emmbrook FC’s first ever women's home game at the spiritual home of "The Sumas" ended with success in the sunshine.

It was tight and enthralling game that could have gone either way. The Sumas got off to a flying start against a quick and attacking minded Oxford side. Wokingham made the breakthrough after 20 minutes when Jo Atkins slotted Alice Lilley through on goal and she made no mistake with the finish. Wokingham keeper, Megan Bonifacii was calm and collected snuffing out a number of Oxford attacks and her distribution was first class. With the Wokingham defence keeping things tight it stayed 1-0 at half time.

Jo Atkins and Alice combined again and Alice completed her second brace in two games by rounding the keeper and finishing cooly under pressure. Oxford quickly grabbed one back to keep the pressure on Wokingham for the final 30 minutes. With both teams having further chances it made for a pulsating game with the final score never certain but ended with a win for Wokingham on their home debut at Lowther Rd.

Wokingham's player of the match went to Lauren Evans for a tireless performance in midfield contributing gong forward and in covering Oxford's speedy breaks.

A solid start for "The Town's" new women's team that showed the Suma spirit from start to finish.
